Style of Therapy

I work with several therapeutic approaches, on both a long-term and time-limited basis, to suit the client. I particularly practice Existential Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypnotherapy.

Existential therapy helps the client come to terms with the dilemmas of day-to-day living. The past, present and future are given equal emphasis, enabling clarification and understanding of the situation so that life can be dealt realistically, with all its essential challenges.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy concentrates on a specific area of concern, setting realistic goals, considering achievements rather than shortcomings, strengths rather than weaknesses, moving towards positive change and taking as few sessions as possible.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy examines unhelpful, negative thinking styles effecting the way we behave and feel and attempts to challenge these negative thoughts resulting in improved behaviour and increased understanding and insight.

Hypnotherapy attempts to address the individual's subconsious mind. Hypnotherapists assist the individual to achieve a deeply relaxed state enlisting the power of the individual's own imagination and often utilising a wide range of techniques such as metaphors or symbolism and the use of direct suggestions for beneficial change. It is important that the individual is personally motivated to change (rather than relying completely on therapist's efforts). However a belief in the possibility of beneficial change can be a good starting point.

I also practice stress management and anger management incorporating relaxation techniques including Tai Chi.
